LIFE IN MONO

BY AIKBENG CHIA

Featuring snapshots of daily life, taken in public spaces on the streets of Singapore, Life in Mono is a series of monochrome photographs shot by renowned Singapore photographer AikBeng Chia.

Driven by a musing on the bonds of human social behavior in public spaces linked together by multicentric municipalities, these images of the mundane everyday life may not mean much now but it gives a glimpse of how ordinary Singaporeans lived for the future generation.

All the photographs are captured with the Leica Q2 Monochrom.

With the Leica Q2 Monochrom, Aik Beng was able to capture these moments in their most authentic form, while enhancing his unique artistry with a captivating visual signature that only a Leica can achieve.

One of the subjects that AikBeng features here is Mr Lai, who is one of the few remaining Kim Zua craftsman in Singapore (Kim Zua, also known as joss paper, refers to paper mache objects that are burned as offerings to the dead at Chinese funerals and Lunar 7th Month). He has been making and selling Kim Zua for 30 years now. According to him, there are only two such craftsmen left in Singapore, including himself.
